Cilicia Sailing Ship

In Armenia the sailing ship “Cilicia” has been a sign of national pride – at least for a few years. This ship was built according ancient construction plans and models as a replica of a trade ship of the 12th century. It was the first sailing ship that surrounded the entire continent Europe in modern times. It did proof that at times when Armenia had access to the see (through the Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia) it was possible to reach any harbour in Europe and beyond. In that way Armenia was able to play a role in naval trade and explorations. By chance, I had the luck to meet Mr. Karen Balayan, the constructor and captain of that vessel. Now the ship is out of the water since the last harbor at the freshwater of Lake Sevan affected the ship’s wooden body. Unfortunately when I visited the ship the funding for maintenance was not given. It was not possible to find enough sponsors to repair the ship that year despite just few thousand dollars would have been necessary to do so. And so the ship was sitting on land at Port Ayas near Artanish at Lake Sevan and dreaming of better times. Nevertheless, it was impressive to see that ship and hear about the adventures. It was a nice feeling to stand on board of that historic ship. As far as I heard now, it was possible to repair the ship. However, despite there is a place in Yerevan that could be dedicated to have a museum with and about the “Cilicia”, there is not enough funding to move that ship from Lake Sevan to Yerevan and build the financial foundation for that museum. I just hope that the Armenians re-discover their national pride that is connected with that ship, that one day I can come back to Armenia and see that great ship and piece of history in great condition and as a sign of pride of Armenians. 3.5 out of 5
